1. General Information
  • Strain Name: BioVector® Streptomyces albus J1074

  • Species:Streptomyces albus

  • Origin: Derivative of S. albus G (DSM 40413). It is a defective variant of the SalI restriction-modification system.

  • Biosafety Level: 1

2. Scientific Importance
  • Heterologous Host: Widely utilized as a "workhorse" for the heterologous expression of complex natural product biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs).

  • Genome Streamlining: Possesses a streamlined genome (~6.8 Mb) compared to other streptomycetes, reducing metabolic noise and precursor competition.

  • Growth Profile: Exceptionally fast growth rate for an actinomycete, typically forming colonies within 48–72 hours on agar.

  • Genetic Tractability: Highly amenable to DNA uptake via intergeneric conjugation from E. coli (e.g., S17-1 or ET12567/pUZ8002).

3. Culture Specifications
  • Morphology: Filamentous mycelial growth; produces white aerial hyphae and grey spores.

Technical Tip:
If you are performing conjugation, ensure the E. coli donor is dam- dcm- (like ET12567) to avoid the restriction barriers of Streptomyces. Additionally, adding apramycin or thiostrepton is common for plasmid maintenance in this strain.
