The NTCC® mHypoE-N43/5 cell line (also known as N43/5) is an immortalized embryonic mouse hypothalamic neuron cell line used as an in vitro model for studying hypothalamic function, particularly related to energy balance, metabolism, and neuroendocrine signaling.

Key Characteristics

  • Origin: Derived from primary hypothalamic cultures of embryonic day 15 (E15) mice.

  • Immortalization: Immortalized by retroviral transfer of the Simian virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen.

  • Cell Type: Described as a mouse embryonic neuron cell line expressing the Kiss1 gene and proopiomelanocortin (POMC), although it contains multiple types of neural populations found in the developing hypothalamus.

  • Sex: The donor sex is female.

  • Usage: It serves as a valuable model for research into conditions like obesity, diabetes, and related metabolic disorders, and for investigating cellular responses to various stimuli such as leptin, tunicamycin (ER stress inducer), and non-nutritive sweeteners.
