NTCC® BRL 3A cell line

The BRL 3A cell line is a spontaneously immortalized rat liver cell line used as an in vitro model for studying liver function, toxicology, and cell proliferation. It was derived from the liver of a male Buffalo rat and retains some characteristics of primary hepatocytes, including the synthesis of albumin.
Key characteristics
  • Origin: Liver of a male Buffalo rat.

  • Cell type: Epithelial-like, but has also been described as fibroblast-like.

  • Growth properties: Adherent, with a high growth rate in culture.

  • Unique feature: Produces a conditioned medium containing a family of polypeptides known as Multiplication Stimulating Activity (MSA). This activity helps partially satisfy the serum requirement for other cells, like chick embryo fibroblasts.
