E. coli strain EcAB4-2 is defective in the DXS gene. This strain contains heterologous genes that permit the use of supplied mevalonate to sustain growth in the absence of DXS. In the absence of exogenous mevalonate this strain cannot grow unless a functional DXS protein is introduced.
